Hardburly Coal Camp
Taken in late 30's or early 40's- I lived in the 7th house on the right-see all the little 'outhouses' behind each home. The large white structure in the back was the coal tipple and was the largest wooden one on record. The Commissary and the Boarding House are the 1st 2 large buildings.

Re: Hardburly Coal Camp
This is a fascinating photo. My grandfather & some uncles worked in the mines in other states, but I bet they were similar to this.

Re: Hardburly Coal Camp
My grandfather worked in the coal mines in W.Va. back in the 20's thru early 40's. They had 13 children. Everyone of the boys entered the navy or the army to escape that kind of life. When my mom passed away a couple of years ago I was going through her pictures and found many pictures of the coal fields. One of the pictures were of my grandfather standing with a younger man who turned out to be my cousin's father. I made a copy of it and sent it to him.

Re: Hardburly Coal Camp
They were made for 2 family's. If a miner got killed and it happened a lot-no safety regulations-then the wife and children had to move. Lots of the women traded houses or if one got empty another family could move in. I think we lived in 3 of the homes there. My Dad worked there and my grandfather got killed there.
