Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
Traverse City is on the N.W. part of Michigan's lower peninsular on Lake Michigan. It was -28 below zero last night. Been getting very cold temps. Just hate to see trees knocked down from the storms, etc. They take so long to grow. We are losing our oak trees due to beetles spreading fungus and it is going thru the roots of the trees to trees. The oaks grow acorns that feed the squirrels, deer, etc.

Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
That is sad...that is why we hate losing so many trees. The one lost last week was a main haven for birds...where we had birdhouses hung and provided shade for the houses and feeders. We had a severe drought several years ago that took five. You can see the stumps in the pic. It was a little woods, now it's a few trees. It is cold there! We're down in the single digits with only like 10 below wind chill. Unusual this time of year here.

Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
I do not remember winters being so cold as our last year and now this year, but it came later this year. 13 trees is a lot to lose. We did not lose a lot in that blizzard but trees were down all over the place on the main highway and several branches on our road were down.

Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
In 1987, in Britain, the Great Storm of 1987 was the worst storm in nearly 300 years and claimed 22 lives in just a three-hour period on the night of October 15 and early hours of October 16.
The lunchtime weather reports had dismissed talk of a severe weather storm, with forecaster Michael Fish assuring viewers that they were not true.
He said: "earlier on today apparently a woman rang the BBC and said she'd heard there was a hurricane on the way.
"Well if you are watching don't worry, there isn't."
In the event winds gusted at a speed of up to 115 miles an hour across the UK and France.

NOw that's what you CALL a storm!

Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
Doesn't make sense they did not predict such a storm? Especially a hurricane? We been -28 two nights in a row, but no storm! The great lakes are about frozen over so we will not get that lake effect snow anyways.

Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
In 2008 we had possibility of severe storms on May 12, Mother's Day. Very common here. Those severe storms turned out to be what they called an inland hurricane which was never heard of here. We lost 13 trees, our fence and numerous articles in the yard, bird bath, etc. I had to stay at work for a week taking emergency procedures for residents. Electricity was out for over a week. But we considered ourselves lucky as the biggest tree that fell just missed our house by a matter of several feet. I hope to never experience that type of storm again. Our severe storms are bad enough.

Re: Last Night's Ice Storm
I GUESS NOT!! Storms can be very scary, I'll never forget the day we had five bad thunderstorms in one day. The last one the wind changed direction and came from the north bringing hail and stronger winds. Water was flowing underneath my home and truck. Took pictures of it. Took 4 or 5 days before the water receded. A mother raccoon with her four babies came swimming to my back porch.
