Hank
Sad to say I had to put down my 15 1/2 year old beagle, Hank, today, October 28, 2011.
I miss him terribly.

The Last Battle
If it should be that I grow frail and weak
and pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this--the last battle--can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
Don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears
You'd not want me to suffer, so.
When the time comes, please let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me til the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
it is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close--we two--these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

THANK YOU GENIE FOR DIRECTING ME TO YOUR BLOG's POEM.
WITHOUT YOUR GAME MESSAGE I COULD HAVE NEVER FOUND IT.
ALTHOUGH IT WAS NOT ME THAT MADE THE DECISION TO PUT MY CHIHUAHUA TWINKIE/MANZANITA DOWN,
I HOLD YOUR POEM VERY DEAR TO ME.

Re: Hank
Thank you for sharing this. It is indeed the thoughts and emotions that one goes through when it is that time for their beloved pet.

Re: Hank
Oh Genie! I lost my beloved little Staffordshire last year - she's lying in a grave that I tend lovingly in the front garden - but it's so hard, after watching her grow up from tiny little pip-squeak to one of the best friends you can ever have in life, and then having to say good-bye.
I think the poem is beautiful, and since the sad fact is that our pets live such a short time compared to us I know that I will turn to it in a few more years time for comfort (as many more years as possible, I hope!) I love my pets so much it must be like losing a child when one dies I imagine, since I have no children.
My commisserations, and thank you for a poem that is full of emotion and could not express the subject more thoughtfully.
