(#5700531) Thread Dispenser/Sewing Case
Posted by Falsecut on 22 Jul 2025 at 7:17PM
Another bag I made earlier this month, this one is a ByAnnie pattern. Thread Dispenser/Sewing Case 2.0 is the name of the pattern although they have updated it to the Roman numeral II instead of 2.0 as they sell it now. ByAnnie patterns are ones that I have made several of although they are always challenging the first time I make them and would be even harder I think for newcomers because she has some unique features and techniques that she uses. She makes her designs so that there are no raw edges, everything is bound on the edges. I was lucky in that my wife actually attended a class she taught so she got familiar with her techniques.
For me, this was a nice project because I've never sewn on vinyl before. It was easy and if you've never done it, it's not much different that sewing on fabric. Feel free to try it. Anyway, here's my little project.
Folded up, it will stand on it's own.

Outside of bag.

Inside of bag with two zippered pockets shown.

This is my first post in this group. I saw your article in the monthly newsletter and thought I could contribute.
Here is the last patchwork project I completed. The pattern is "Tumble & Twirl". I used Maywood Studios Little Lambies flannel. Since the flannel is already heavier than quilting cotton, I used a 70/30 batting.

I didn't find it difficult to sew but the directions were wonky. If you ever do, remind me and I'll share my learnings. The biggest things were the width of the strap sleeves and the fact that the pleats are three on one side and two on the other which was unexpected for me. It has to do with one side containing the bottom of the bag.

That's really cleaver. I would love to try that. Is it hard ?

I make bags for fun and occassionally for profit. Right now, more for fun. I was looking for something different to make and my wife suggested this bag. It's based on a Simplicity pattern, S9908, bag A. I didn't line this one because I was trying it out. It takes 3/4 yard of fabric and about four feet of strapping. I would modify some of the dimensions if I make another one of these. The sleeves that hold the strapping fold to 1.5 inches and with 1/4 inch seam allowances on both side, that leaves one inch of space in the tubing for the strap. Since the strapping is 1 inch wide, as you can guess, there isn't a lot of play. You really need a little more room for the straps to slide around like they are supposed to.
The bag is pleated and only three inches wide by 26 inches long when folded down. This is it in the collapsed state.

It expands through the opening in the middle to hold a lot of volume and weight. I think I could get a basketball in it. To get it back to the collapsed state, all you have to do is pull on the ends and it snaps right back to the flat state. I'll probably make a sleeve to hold it when I'm not using it.

I have a couple more bags that I've just made. I'll post in a few days. Right now, I'm trying to make a hat. Never done that before. Wish me luck.

Do you just put the wool on the balloon wet and when it's dry put something over it to stiffen it?? You did a great job with the colors, oh and did you color the wool or get it already in colors? I want to try that one.. My granddaughter and I are always looking for a project..
