is part of "The Threepenny Opera" ("Die Dreigroschenoper") from 1928 by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.
Louis Armstrong recorded it in 1955. His version rose to #20 in the US, #8 in the UK and #3 in the Netherlands. This version was inducted into the Grammy HOF in 1997 and into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress in 2016.
Bobby Darin's version rose to #1 in 1959 and was considered the #2 song for all of 1959 by Billboard. Darin was awarded "Record of the Year" and "Best New Artist" by the Grammys in 1959. It was inducted into the Grammy HOF two years after Armstrong's version and into the National Recording Registry in unison with Armstrong's. In 2003 Rolling Stone considered it #251 on their "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" list.
Ella Fitzgerald performed it live in 1960 in Berlin. She forgot most of the lyrics but like a true artist improvised lyrics on the spot. A single of this rose to #6 in the US.
This song has been covered by countless artists through the ages.
