leading

I have a rule never (well almost never) lead a five. It is probable that the opponent has a ten or picture card. I also lead from a pair hoping opponent will match it me a triplet for six points. A seven pair or less can cost you twelve points if opponent has same pair. Rare. Remember, any lead above a four can be developed into a 15.

Additional tips about pairs during pegging

This is usually a good play. DeLynn Colvert gives a couple additional tips. First, your opponent may try the same thing. Don’t let your opponent **rely** on the pair royal (triplet) for six, however. Don’t pair his lead every time. He may stop leading his pair if he can’t rely on your pair every time.
Second, be prepared for when your opponent doesn’t lead the pair. If you lead from your 7-pair, and the opponent plays 8, have an 8 in hand to pair back. Or play a 10 (or face), hoping for a “Go,” and then a 6 for “31.”
