GoldToken's Monthly News

GoldToken's treasured and ever busy squirrels are saving a number of cool Offering gift "suprises" for GoldToken's upcoming Olympic games. So, there were only a few new Discussion Board additions to GoldToken during this past October. Here's the list:

  • We have a fun new game DB for you to try, called ! What are you going to steal?
  • Please check out the DB, hosted by our very own Skywalker! He's got some terrific lessons planned, as well as thought-provoking material for reading and discussion. High five
  • Do you have a question regarding how to play a certain game? Try Board hosted by MM David littlefair XI. He is there to help you with "how to play" game advice.
  • We have also added a new DB for ! Please join The Prime Time TV Club with a little chitchat. The first club to do the honors. High five

A few players have written to ask if they can still join in the upcoming Olympic games, and the answer is yes. We do have room to add a few players. So if you are interested, please contact Jacob1987 today, to be assigned to a team to play in this years Olympic games. Thumbs up Have fun

111 Congratulations to the mysterious player who submitted this Mahjong variant in the New Game contest:

Each pair of counters has a value and if you pair them up you get that value added to your score.
If you fail to get a pair you lose a specific amount of points.

Once all players fail to find a pair, the round ends.
Then winner is the first to a specific amount of points.
Variants could be 50, 75 and 100 points.
Different layouts and patterns

1 The winner of the above contest won a two month extention to their current membership and our site graphic artists are considering this project as a future game addition. High five It pays to enter! High five

I cannot stress enough, how easy it is to win one of the fun contests listed in our monthly newsletter. Dozens of players have won their choice of icons, or extentions to their current membership doing so (more than a handful have won multiple times!). Our team works hard to design these contests so they will be amusing/engaging/delightful/interesting/pleasing for all, so be sure to check the latest contests out in this newsletter and try your hand at winning! It's almost as fun as playing!

Have a wonderful month and play like you mean it!

What is a ladder?

Almost everyone is familiar with the concept of a gaming ladder. Each player occupies a rung of the ladder. New players start at the bottom rung. Players on lower rungs challenge those on higher rungs to games, and if they win, they move up to the higher rung. After enough games are played, the ladder will represent, more or less, the relative skill level of the players in the ladder, with the best players at the top of the ladder.

But how does that work on a turn-based gaming site?

While this concept works well for games that may take an evening to play in over the board competition, it isn't extremely well-suited for correspondence gaming, where a game can take several months to play. By having to challenge each player on higher rungs, it could take a great player literally years or dozens of years to climb to the top of a ladder with only a few hundred players in it.

So we've taken the basic ladder concept and tweaked it a bit so that it works well in a turn-based gaming environment by making the following changes:

  • Instead of one player per rung, there can be many people on the same rung
  • About once per day, all available players on a single rung are randomly paired up in challenge games
  • A player who wins a game moves up to the next higher rung
  • A player who loses a game moves down to the next lower rung, with rung 1 being the lowest possible rung
  • Players who draw will remain together on the same rung
  • Three times per year, the rungs are compressed to ensure that good players have an opportunity to climb the ladder

What will happen if I join a ladder?

When you join a ladder, you will be listed among the players on rung 1. If there are any players on that rung who are not currently engaged in a ladder game against another player, then you will be scheduled to play against that player within about 24 hours. Otherwise, you will not be scheduled in a ladder game until an opponent is available.

You will only have one ladder challenge game at a time from that ladder. The game will have a timeout period of 3 days, and your vacation days and days off will apply to that timeout period. If you time out, you will lose the game.

After you finish a game, you may end up with a period of time where an opponent in the ladder is not available to start a new game, so you will not necessarily always have a ladder challenge game in progress. However, as soon as an opponent is available, you will be scheduled against that opponent within about 24 hours.

The one exception to this is if you tie a game against an opponent, and that player is the only player available in your rung. In that case, you will not be immediately rescheduled against the same player that you just played. Instead, you will both wait for another opponent to become available, after which one of you will be randomly scheduled against that opponent.

How do I join a ladder?

Go to your gamesheet options box, and click See Ladders under the Games section. From there, you can scroll through the various ladder games available. Click the box next to the game of your choice, and you will be added to the bottom rung in that ladder. No need to do anything else or send out challenges. The database will automatically add you to a match when a player becomes available. Return to the ladder page to join more ladders.

Have fun

Game Of The Month

November's game of the month is Caveman! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament by signing up today for The November 2011 Game of the Month - Caveman Tournament! Have fun

To start with you get 5 cards.
Your initial hands will be distributed as follows:

Starting hand Distribution:

  • 50.1% High Card
  • 42.2% Pair
  • 4.8% Two Pair
  • 2.1% Three of a Kind
  • 0.4% Straight
  • 0.2% Flush
  • 0.1% Full House
  • 0.02% Four of a kind
  • 0.002% Straight Flush

Important points to take away from this:

Just over half the time you will not even have a pair in your hand to start with. But the same applies to your opponent of course.
Roughly 2 times out 5 you'll have a pair
You only get two pair once every 20 deals or so - you have a good starting hand, but it's not likely to improve - be wary.
About once in every 50 deals or so you'll start with three of a kind - this is a powerful hand and is likely to win at showdown. Try not to scare your opponent away, but also try and make sure you get chips in the pot to capitalise on your good fortune.
Hitting a pat straight, flush or better is very rare - and as you'll not be drawing any cards your opponent should realise you have a good hand after the draw. Same as for three of a kind, try and maximise your gain without scaring your opponent away.

Drawing Probabilities:

Drawing one card to an open-ended straight flush (e.g. 6789 all clubs).32% (~ 1 in 3) you'll hit a straight or better.
Drawing one card to an inside straight flush (e.g. 5679 all clubs).26% (~ 1 in 4) you'll hit a straight or better.
Drawing one card to a flush.19% (~ 1 in 5) you'll hit.
Drawing one card to an open ended straight.17% (~ 1 in 6) you'll hit.
Drawing one card to an inside straight, or to two pair, or three of a kind when you keep a kicker.9% (~ 1 in 11) you'll hit.
Drawing two cards to three of a kind.10% (~ 1 in 10) you'll improve.
Drawing two cards to a pair+kicker (e.g keeping 66A).17% (~ 1 in 6) you'll hit two pair, and about 9% (~ 1 in 11) you'll make trips or better.
Drawing two cards to a three-flush or three straight.Roughly 4% (~ 1 in 24) you'll make it.
Drawing three cards to a pair.16% (~ 1 in 6) you'll hit two pair, 11% (about 1 in 9) you'll hit trips, and about 1% (1 in 100) you'll hit a full house or four of a kind.

How to Draw.

When you draw you have limited information. In short all you have is the way the betting went pre-draw, and possibly you know how many cards your opponent has drawn.

Some of my thoughts on particular situations:

  • Assuming that your opponent is not a fool is generally the best policy.
    • If there was no raising pre-draw and your opponent takes 1, they are likely trying to fill a straight or flush. Probably they won't make it, so you should try and draw to give yourself a high pair or better.
    • If however there has been raising it is more likely that they have two pair. Again, you can take a reasonable guess as to what hand they have, and what their chances to improve are, and hence what you will need to get to beat them.
  • Generally it is best to draw in the manner which gives you the best chance of improving. Deception overpracticed stops being deception.
  • If you think by the betting style of your opponent that they have a pair of aces, or two pair then it might be a good idea to draw one to your trips, trying to make them think you are drawing to a straight or flush.
  • If the pot wasn't raised and you have garbage, don't be afraid to change all your cards, or all but one.
  • In my opinion, depending on the way the betting round has gone, it is often better to keep two high cards and draw three to those instead of drawing to a lower three-straight or three flush. Your opponent will be wary that you already have a pair, and as you'll see from above it's more likely than not that they do not themselves have a high pair so if you hit one you are more likely to end up with a winning hand than you would with a busted flush or straight draw

After the draw.

Well, this is judgment time.

You need to balance how the betting went pre-draw, how many cards your opponent has changed, and any action (bet/check) they make after the draw.
Once you have an idea of how your opponent plays this should become easier. review, review, review.

Remember, the aim is to end up with all the chips at the end of the game. Not to try and win every pot.

If you didn't make a hand that you think will beat your opponent there is no shame in folding and getting 5 brand new cards...this time you may get that Royal Flush you were after..of course if you made a crying call and threw all your chips away you didn't get these new cards.

Given the choice between slim chance and no chance, I'll take slim every time, and recall the old maxim "All it takes is a chip and a chair."

Hopefully the maths above, and my random thoughts make sense - feel free to drop me a line with any questions and I'll happily discuss odds etc. Or pop along to The Chip and a Chair Club.

We hope you enjoy it!

While playing with my brother, jfromvt, at another site, he suggested I join GOLDTOKEN. This is now the only place I go to play any games. Everything I wanted is here! I could go on and say about all the good people, great games, etc. but if you are reading this, you already know. I never had a problem with anyone and they could eliminate the chump feature as far as I'm concerned. There are so many great games here and new ones coming all the time its hard to say what my favorite any more because it keeps changing. Would like to say thanks to eliphont551 for teaching me all about wiki's. I never turn down an invite, so send me an invite!

Interesting Club Of The Month
* Interview by: laura lee*

This months club interview is with The Castaways Club

1. Please Tell us a little about your club....

Name?

The Castaways Club

How long has this club been on GT?

We celebrated our fourth anniversary on September 9 of this year.

About how many members do you have?

We currently have 145 members. We are usually full, but we've lost some members due to the economy. We're holding some of those seats open in case one or more of our members is able to renew. We are hopeful that they will.

2. Are you the original owner?

I am the original owner. But, I tend to be a hands off manager so any member who wants to work in the club is treated on an equal level with me. And, I have some great officers!! They are opinionated sometimes, but I like that.

If so, what prompted you to start this club?

I started the club in the middle of the night on the 9th of November, 2008 because a whole bunch of us had lost our place to play when another club where we were playing died. The reason I started the club was to give all of us a place to play each other as well as other members of the site. Hence the name, Castaways. After about a year, we started inviting "outsiders" to join, and it goes from there.|

3. What kind of games does your club play? Or are you a "chat" only club?

On one board or another, we offer every game Gold Token has on its games list. Our Raft Games offer all of the 2-player games. We start as many of those that have players signed up monthly. They are all wiki games, and players can sign on to be automatically included when the games begin, or the members can sign up and play for the current month only.

On our MPC Games board, we offer all of the multi-player games which start as soon as we have a full wiki for one game.

Then, we have our Founders Day Games once a year. Once again, we include all games that have players sign up. We play once a year, because they run a year, then any that aren't finished are declared ended.

What kind of discussions does your club get into?

We mostly chat about games, but on the club discussion board, we are pretty open to just about anything. We use that board to announce important things going on in our lives, and we all offer support to our members having a hard time and good wishes for those who are celebrating an important development in their lives.

Besides the games, we have a Prayer List on which members can list people of concern. And, we have a board called, I Need Help NOW! All of our officers monitor this board and we are pretty quick to answer questions about the club or the games.

4. Does your club do alot of club vs. club ?

We do a lot of club vs club games, although not as many as we used to when nisqually was our games master. That man could put out more wikis than just about anybody on the site. We always have 5-10 Club vs Club games going at any time, sometimes more. We are also playing the site generated Club Vs Club games.

5. What do you think of the tourny ones. Or do you enjoy doing the wiki's?

Some of us enjoy doing wikis, but we play both automatic tournaments as well as wiki games. Somehow, the wiki games seem to have a warmer atmosphere according to some of our members.

6. Do you have a lot of 'helpers'?

We have 16 officers (one is honorary for nisqually ) who passed away.

7. What are your future plans for your club?

We are currently implementing a plan to encourage people who camp out on our membership roster to become more active in the club. And, we are encouraging those people to invite new members to a game to (1) involve the inactive member, and (2) involve the new member.
Our group of officers have very active minds. We present and pass on new plans every day.

8. Do you have any other clubs? Would you like to tell us a little about them?.

Yes, I have two other clubs, The Texas Connection Club and The Juke Joint Club.

The Texas Connection Club is where all us cowboys and cow girls can hang out and play games together. I haven't had time to put a lot into the club. I inherited it from a member who left the site altogether.....for now. We're not closed, though, and all Texans are allowed.

The Juke Joint Club is a discussion board. We're set up as a club, although all we really do is discuss music there, music we like or dislike. We are a site friendly group, though.

Thank you for this opportunity to tell everyone about our doings on Castaways.
If you have a hankerin' to join us, just message one of our officers. If we have seats left, we will let you occupy it, and we'll be glad to have you. Castaways only has 1 Rule: Rule # Only - *H ave |||||F*un. The natives are friendly, and we'll serve you a nice, cool, fruity drink to wet your whistle after swimming all the way to our Island But, watch out for Kenny the Shark swimming He is known to steal the umbrellas out of the refreshments.

Thank you for letting us have a look at your club......
Laura
