Crossword Puzzles - An amiable gathering of word-type people trying to solve word puzzles together. Hosted by HeatherN
Please read the Discussion Board Rules before participating in the discussion boards.
A board to solve crosswords - both cryptic and straight, UK style grids.
Crosswords will be solved clue-by-clue, with the solver choosing which clue comes next.
There is a mixture of themed crosswords of different sizes. If you have any suggestions for any themed crosswords you would like to solve, please post on the board or send a message to HeatherN who will compile all the crosswords.
Crossword tokens will be awarded to the top three solvers for each crossword. The solvers are to be recorded on a "Solvers' tally" for each crossword."
All crosswords of 13X13 or larger, starting from when the first “Names” crossword started (not sure when that was) will feature (usually) three mystery words.
The letters will appear on the grid in three different colours, and when all the letters of one colour have appeared, you can unscramble the letters to guess the mystery word, whether or not you are guessing a clue as well.
Please do not try and guess the mystery word before all the stated number of letters of that colour have appeared, even if you are certain you know what the word will be. If you do, you will be disqualified from guessing when all of the letters are present.
If you get the word correct – you will get an extra point on the Solvers’ Tally.
All three words in any one crossword will have the same number of letters, the number of which I shall state in the blurb for that particular crossword, and I will also state what the three colours are.
For 13X13 crosswords the words will be either 3 or 4 letters’ long; for 15X15 crosswords the words will be 5 or 6 letters’ long; for 17X17 crosswords, the words will be either 7 or 8 letters' long.
If it is a themed crossword, the words will be related to the theme. If it is a themeless crossword, the words will be related to each other.
The 11X11 crosswords, for example “Pictures”, “Goldies” and the current “Animals” puzzle will not incorporate the Bonus Mystery Words feature.

Three letter words
With immediate effect, to speed things up a little bit, if you choose a clue with a three-letter answer, you must also choose another three-letter answer clue. This is because three-letter words are generally easy to solve. If there is only one three-letter left, you should choose another clue with the next shortest answer in addition to the three-letter word clue. The solver must get both clues correct to win a point on the tally.
Some types of crosswords will be exempt from this, but I will state this with the instructions for individual puzzles.
Thank you for your co-operation!

If more than one crossword with a clue to be solved is on the board when you visit, you may only answer one clue at that visit. You may then revisit the board after a minimum four hours have elapsed and answer another clue if still available. This is to allow for time differences and players' work commitments etc. This does not apply to collaborative crosswords such as the alphabet, number or story crosswords. Thank you for your co-operation.

(#5580070) Move Over Clue 1A
Posted by HeatherN on 17 Feb 2024 at 8:09AM
1 Across: Period of 100 years (Y replaced by A) (7)
Solvers’ Tally
Withacee 21A, 17D, 23A (3)
Jools 15A, 16D, 22A, 18D, 18A, 15D, 19D, 10D&11D (8)
Instructions:
This crossword was compiled by Dragon Jr
First you have to solve the clue
Then you have to replace one letter from the solution to the clue with another letter which is slotted in a different place in the word to the removed letter to make a new word
The new word is then the answer that goes in the grid
Here is an example:
1 Across: Type of opinion poll (V replaced by T) (6)
I have put in brackets that the letter V is to be replaced by the letter T. If you worked out correctly that the answer to the clue is “survey” you then know to replace the V with a T.
You then need to work out where in the word to place the T to make another word. Here you would place the T after the E in survey to make the word surety.
The solution you give should be the new word and not the original answer to the clue.
A further clue to the new word will only be given if people are really struggling.
The solver should give the clue they would like next as usual.
Any questions, please ask, and myself or Dragon Jr will reply (whichever one of us sees your query first).
Please observe the four-hour rule (see above)
Please choose two clues if choosing one with a three-letter answer
