People often use the argument "This other thing is even worse. Since we aren't doing anything about that, why do anything about this smaller problem." That doesn't make sense to me. Many things can at least be improved or slowed by solving many smaller problems. Each one may help and they can build up to a big effect. That would be like saying "more children are killed by disease than by guns, so let's not do anything about school shootings." I don't think that argument will make any parent whose child died in a school shooting feel any better.
