January 2018
(unknown photo)
I invite everyone to in the New Year by introducing yourself to everyone on GoldToken's General Chat discussion board. It is a great place to get to know likeminded GoldToken'ites!
The beginning of a new year is an ideal time to stop, look up and get our bearings. So this year, you really want to improve your game (that's part of why we play, isn't it?). Do you know the feeling? You’re super stoked about this winning big change you want to create in your life. Excitedly, you fill up your gamesheet. But after struggling with it for a few weeks (or even just days), it all becomes a grind. What was supposed to be an exciting planned opportunity to master your intended game has quickly become a source of dread, frustration, and self-doubt: Why can’t I win or at least lose less? Why am I not getting it? Why do I always do this? What’s wrong with me?
So then you quit. Again and again and again, each time feeling a little more discouraged than the last. But winning doesn't have to be this hard. In fact, it can be quite easy (and even a lot of fun).
Assuming you already know how to play (you can't get better if you don't know the rules lol), you might start by joining a club that specializes in your favored game. Regularly associating with like minded players will help your game tremendously as they pass out tips and tricks to their compadres! Try playing, not against the grand master, but someone more closely rated to yourself.
Don't make yourself feel good by playing people that clearly are worse than you. If you have to make yourself feel better after a loss, a good way is to start planning how to counter your opponent. Check out books on the subject, and study the moves. Find, practice and develop a few pre-planned moves that are commonly used in that game until you fully understand how they work and function. Then add more, and more, fully comprehending each tactic before adding another. By the end of a year, you will have amassed a huge and well practiced knowledge base in your game this way.
Notice patterns in moves that tend to make you win the game and work intently on those. Ask someone to coach you in your game of choice and review a few past games with them. Nobody is a grandmaster the first game much less the second, but by respecting the knowledge of others, you will be well on your way there. Make it your goal to play 10,000 games (to become a professional at anything, you need put in 10,000 hours, so why not games). Lastly, to fully improve your game, join tournaments. There's nothing like being pitted against a tough player to practice your newfound proficiency in the game. If you are truly committed to becoming a better player, this is the path you should follow.
So...what will be your game to mostly improve upon for 2018?
Have a wonderful month and play like you mean it!

Yes! Many games offer options for different sized playing pieces, different piece designs, different colors for game boards, etc. While playing your game, look for the "Adjust Graphics" link below the player clock information (below the game board). When you click the link and scroll down you'll see the options available for that game type.

I have been playing on GoldToken for such a long string of years, that I can't recall when exactly was the first time I played. In the late 1990s I was merrily playing on Its Your Turn ( a game site I saw so many times mentioned in your newsletters ), when one of my opponents asked me if I had ever heard of GoldToken...I said I hadn't...He told me his mom was a member on GoldToken, that she had only good things to say about the site and suggested that I could join if i wanted....of course I wanted, as I was only a guest on IYT and they had only 15 moves allowed per day....By that time, I was already becoming a board game fan....I joined and started merrily playing, surprised by all the "new" elements I came across daily...I remember not knowing at first what gl and gg meant, so I had to ask...I still remember the elation I felt on my first win...and how sad I was for not being able to join tournaments, as I was only a guest...On this site I met that opponent, who, over the years, has become a close online friend, and who, for some years now, has been paying for my membership...I love the site because of its "decency", the many folded opportunities it offers for people not only to play but also to socialize, communicate. I like it that it is a site open to so many good and nice things, always letting place for new games to appear, things to be tried...In the mean time I have come across many nice opponents, good - willed board mates...I love the word games of different types...I am not a native speaker of English and they are a huuuuge challenge for me....I welcome all the lovely additions that the site "team" finds fit to add, I encourage board game lovers to join, and I send my warmest, heartfelt regards to everybody who contributes to this site's blooming and letting us join hands across the world
Best wishes Flowery

There are many clubs on GoldToken which gather together people who have similar interests and one of the newest is The Astronomy Club which was formed in March of last year. Owner quietman tells us why, “With the 2017 Great American Total Eclipse of the Sun just a few months away, the interest in astronomy was booming and I thought I'd capture the excitement by creating a new club with astronomy as the theme. I considered several names and ultimately the most obvious name was chosen.”
He has carefully crafted the club to have a specific atmosphere “What makes all of my clubs unique is they all have a theme and many hours are put into creating complimentary wiki pages to go along with the theme to make the clubs more interesting. In the The Astronomy Club, in addition to our wiki start page that lists our club tournaments, I have added several club themed pages which include Astronomical Events Calendar, Observatories Around the World, Our Solar System, Image Archives including Deep Space images from Hubble, and many more.” Doing so is part of what quietman finds most rewarding, “I love owning clubs because it offers me a chance to be creative and use all the wonderful tools that GoldToken provides to make wikis more fun and interesting. Like everyone else, I first learned the wiki coding to create a simple information box with players names and game scores, and from there I took it to the next level by adding images to my wikis. Eventually I wanted to do more with wikis so I developed theme based clubs that would allow me to use the theme in creative ways as I have done in The Astronomy Club and { Club }.”
As for games, he explains, “All the basic games were offered at first then more were added as club members requested them and games where removed if there was little or no interest.” The club has lively conversations, “We discuss many topics in our club discussion boards but the discussions regarding the existence of extraterrestrial life can be very funny and very serious at the same time. Everyone has their own ideas and theories about the possibility that we are not alone.”
Looking to the future, he says, “I believe The Astronomy Club is here to stay. Kookaburra has been invaluable to me in running our teams, ladders and club vs club challenges, while I focus on building, editing and maintaining all of the wikis that go into making this club and all of our clubs more interesting and more fun for our club members.” He assures us, “We are fairly new but this club will focus on upcoming astronomical events so we will always adapt with the times.”

**~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~**
We would like to say to Flowery for letting us step into their personal life for a bit.
1. What brought you to GoldToken?
The same way as so many other players on the site, I initially had been playing (still am ) on Its Your Turn...one of my opponents suggested that I try GoldToken, as his mom was playing there and she loved it. That's how, years back, I logged on, and have not left the site ever since.
How'd you choose your name for GT?
As for choosing the name, it resembles pretty much the one I have on the other site....besides, I love flowers
2. What interests you most on GT?
I am interested in playing "clean", carrying on small conversations. But what I am interested in the most, is, to overcome my desire to win, and play for the fun of it and for good companionship... we are all winners, after all....
Favorite game here?
My favourite games are word games
3. What state or country do you reside in?
I live in Romania Romania.
What in your country do you think tourists should definitely see?
I am sure tourists would enjoy visiting the Danube Delta, which is unique in Europe, the Bear - cub nursery, which is located in the National Park of Bicaz Gorges and Hasmasul Mare mountain....and last, but not least, the Peles Castle and places where Dracula is said to have lived.
4. What hobbies do you have?
I like reading and listening to music
5. Children? Grandchildren?
I have no children and no grandchildren
6. Do you work? If so, what kind of work do/did you do?
I work as a teacher of foreign languages (English and French) in primary and middle school.
7. Any pets?
Unfortunately I live in a 4th floor apartment and that's not the proper place for a pet to live in...at least this is how I see it...But if I had the chance, I'd love to have hedgies around...this is why my icon on the site is a hedgie.
8. Are you under 30?___ 30 to 50? ___ or over 50?
Male or Female?
I am female, over 50.
9. What's the farthest you've been from home?
I visited Israel and Germany.
10. If you could be anywhere right now where would that be?
I am a very home - centered person...so, the best place for me would be either my favorite armchair, and a good book to read or, near the window, watching the snowfall, with a cup of coffee with topping in my hand
11. Favorite season?
I love Spring, with the awakening of nature, the world around becoming colourful and noisy again, and the feeling of spiritual rejuvenation
12, Favorite movie?
My favourite movie is The Great Gatsby - it was the first movie where I was able to understand the English words without having to look at the surtitles. And also Schindler's List, for a number of very different reasons
Favorite Song?
My favourite song is Sailing by Rod Stewart
13. If you could meet anyone (living and dead) in the world. Who would it be ?

Testimonial Of The Month |
Brought to you by:Flowery *GoldToken *Players* |

CLUB CONNECTION Brought to you by bookfox
