GoldToken's Monthly News

I am pleased to announce the conclusion of GoldToken's 2009 Olympics. This was the fastest Olympics played here yet! Thanks written on a blackboard to all the players and teams for games well played from the entire GoldToken staff! The entire winners list can be found on the [ GoldToken Olympics 2009 ] wiki.
  • A huge CONGRATS to { Club } for being the team to not only win the most points, but to swamp all other teams! Well played!!! High five
  • Congratulations also to jbdobie for a top score of 65, the player with the most points in GoldToken's 2009 Olympics!! Red car
  • An honorable mention goes to Straycat for coming in a very close second with 64 points. Thumbs up
  • I wish to also send a special thank*you to all the team leaders, for their diligence, patience and leadership in managing the 2009 games. It was not an easy task and required all your people and game skills to bring this Olympics to a happy conclusion for everyone - but soooooo worth it! Look at your success!
Be sure to send your Olympic team leaders a special thank you for their time and efforts. Without them, GoldToken Olympics would not be possible.

October saw the addition of two very different games on GoldToken, thanks to the awesome coding skill of Mecir:
    • Domination, a game where the goal is to dominate the game map by capturing all territories on the map. The main game is similar to the well-known game Risk, and two variants which expand the game in various directions. Special Thanks written on a blackboard to FixitDave for brainstorming the two variants and providing us with three incredible maps to conquer and "dominate" all others.
    • Senet, is an old board game originating in ancient Egypt, and considered to be one of the eldest games in the world. It is one of the predecessors of modern Backgammon, and you will find that many aspects of this game are similar to those found in Backgammon. The wonderful graphics were created by marcmandy.
Be sure to send both FixitDave and marcmandy your appreciation for their fabulous contributions that allow us to add these games to your playing repertoire. We couldn't have added these intriguing games without them!

Game Of The Month

November's game of the month is Checkers! Join us in a fun Double Elimination Tournament of the GoldToken's North American version of the game by signing up today for The November 2010 Game Of The Month - Checkers! Tournament Have fun

Checkers has a long and "checkered" history. Checkers, as we know it, probably began as a game called Alquerque, or Quirkat. Alquerque boards and pieces have been found in archeological digs dating as far back as 600 BCE, and images of Alquerque have been found carved into temple walls dating as far back as 1400 BCE. It was played throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean basin. It was enjoyed by the Ancient Egyptians, mentioned by both Plato and Homer, and even made its way into India.

Historians place the creation of "modern" Checkers in the 12th century CE, when someone (probably France), combined the rules and pieces of Alquerque with a common chessboard. The game was called Fierges, and the pieces "ferses," the same name given to the queen in Chess. At that time the queen moved just one space at a time. Later, Ferses also became a name for the game, and by the 15th century both Fierges and Ferses had been replaced by the name Jeu De Dames, or simply Dames.

By the 16th century, Dames was hugely popular in France and formalized rule sets began to appear. In 1535 the Forced Capture rule was introduced to Dames, and players began to call Forced Capture Dames "Jeu Force." It was as Jeu Force that the game made its way to England, where it was renamed Draughts, and eventually to North America, where it was renamed Checkers. Along the way the rules adjusted and variants rose, but the basic form of Jeu Force remained intact.

Dames without the Forced Capture rule remained popular in France, under the name Le Jeu Plaisant De Dames, or Plaisant. In the 18th Century, Plaisant replaced the 8x8 grid with a 10x10 grid and expanded the piece count to 20 per side. This variant likely came out of Holland.

Checkers is only called "Checkers" in North America. In most other English-speaking places, the game is called Draughts, and in much of Europe the game is called "English Variant Draughts."

Countries around the world also have their own local names for their own local variant rules, boards, and even pieces. And many European variants, including International Draughts, use a "flying king" that can move more than one square at a time, while in both Germany and Italy, kings can only be captured by other kings. In Turkey, they use both dark and light squares, and pieces can move either forward or side to side. Canadian Checkers, or Jeu De Dames Canadien, uses a 12x12 grid with 30 pieces per side! Armenian and Frisian checkers are very wild games as the rules allow for the king to jump by multiple squares in all 8 directions!

Both Checkers/Draughts and International Draughts remain popular games to this day. National and international tournaments exist for each version, with the first World Championship tournament for English Draughts taking place in 1847. You can read more about Checkers on GoldToken's info page titled Unknown Info Topic.

Despite its name, Chinese Checkers is not Chinese (it originated in Germany), and it has nothing to do with Checkers. The name "Chinese Checkers" was chosen as a marketing strategy in the early 1900s, to lend it some Oriental mystique and to connect it to a game consumers were already familiar with.

GoldToken's Game of the Month is intended to reintroduce and remind players of some of the special games we have on GoldToken. In doing so, we are running a Game of the Month - Double Elimination Tournament open for everyone with a 5 Golderos prize to the winner.

Club Announcements:

I have four clubs, Fairy Tales, Club Nascar, To Your Health and Prime Time TV...we play story grabble, which is a regular game of grabble but the player then uses the words they formed in the game in a story. It has been such a fun game to play and to read the stories, we pulish them on the discussion boards and then are put in our club newsletter. Wanted to share this story with the site, hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did and the players did putting it together...

This story was taken from a game in The To Your Health Club....and was written by LadyeFantasy and Crispies. All underlined words where placed in the game of Grabble and then put into the story.

There once was a lady who lived at # seven Daisy Lane. She had a wonderful view of the Confederate Recreation Battleground ... complete with an old black cannon, in the nearby canyon . Her house was a wonderful little cabin . Despite having tiny bony little hands, her garden was lush with bright sweet-smelling flowers. There was also a lush apple tree, and she loved eating the juicy red apples and sharing them with friends. It was the beginning of a beautiful fair day when she stepped out in her garden that morning. Noticing her bricks were loose, she decided to grout them. She liked a tidy garden. Now she had to decide between the different samples of various colors and textures of grouts and also whether to change the pattern of the garden's bricks or just repair the existing one. While contemplating this, she heard the lazy drone of a plane overhead. It was a familiar summer sound like the bees in her garden. She waited for it to fly overhead, and then once the small plane appeared, waving Hi as if the pilot could actually see her and be surprised. When it flew near the peak of a nearby mountain she noticed that it seemed to be trying to land. It was kind of exciting and she wanted to tell someone from the local coven of nature lovers. As she began to journey down the grassy knoll towards her sleepy little village, she met another early riser , her neighbor down the lane. He was bringing her the cork tiles for her newest renovation project in the house. " Oh my cork tiles !!! How nice of you Na to bring them while the day is still cool! Did you see the plane I was watching?" "Yes" he said. "At first glance I thought it was a chimp piloting the little craft." "I hope it doesn't ruin all that new work done by the utility wirers , they just barely got it finished last week." "That IS a good point, I'm glad we aren't talking about multiple planes!" "Will you keep an eye out and that will allow me to get back to my projects at home? I still have a desk to get sanded and stained before the rising sun begins to put out it's dapples of bright rays in my lace window curtains and make the house too warm." It will be nice when I'm done to go back out and enjoy the fresh air. As I walk towards my little house, and look at it's front windows, I can see my little white qat already lying in the sunshined window ... her favorite place to be on such a beautiful day. "Good morning little Ta , would you like a bowl of milk ? " I then received quite a jolt as I remembered that I'd forgotten to give Ta her little treat. I had been distracted earlier when thinking about my walk a few days earlier. Now, I needed to contact two covens , the nature lovers as well as the historical. I wanted to get more information on an old volcano site I stumbled upon. There were different coloration's of magmas and I was curious as to why. It really made me think, and sometimes I just wanted to hop in a taxi and fly away. But alas, I love this area. Just then, a little grey rabbit popped out of his hole, with a sly little look on his face, as if to say , "You know you'd never be happy anywhere else !" , scampering off to enjoy the beautiful day with all it's fresh clean air and bright sunshine. I was definitely cured of any wanderlust! Laughing to myself, I mused contented with my life, "Well, this will definitely never be as 'fancy' as the Ritz ... but re the truly important things in life ... it is all I'll ever want ... or need !!! In fact, I was so happy I started to sing- Do Rey Mi and a Tra la LAAAA. It might not be everyone's idea of the "good life" ... but I'm right at home.
