September 2016

  • Connect 6 is here!

In August, Connect 6 was introduced. Connect Six is similar to Go Moku. The differences are that the game plays on a bigger board, you get to place two pieces at once instead of one (except for the first move), and, as the name suggests, the goal is to place 6 pieces in a row.

  • New Club Position: Club Director!

There is now a new position available to the clubs - Club Director! Club Directors are able to create club tournaments for their club - these tournaments can only be joined by members of the club.

Each club can create one club tournament per month.

Before you attempt to initiate any tournaments, we recommend that you read the guide over at Creating Club Tournaments. A Club Tournament Director 101 discussion board is also available for any questions and related issues.

Have a wonderful month and play like you mean it!

1st Stop Information
Site tips and helpful tools

I'm trying to make a move in my game, and I'm unable to do so. What's wrong?

It's possible that there's nothing wrong! A good place to start is with the Rules of the game you're playing. There's a handy link in the Help box below the game board. There are many games that have move restrictions in certain circumstances, and even experienced players sometimes forget about these restrictions in the heat of game play when they're setting up a fantastic position. Smiling

If you don't find the help you need in the rules, then try posting on one of the boards in the Game Discussions section. You'll find this link at the top of your game sheet. That page has links to discussion boards for each game type. There are so many kind, helpful experts playing on GoldToken who are happy to help out and offer a second set of eyes for problem solving.

If those options don't help solve your problem, you may need to post on the Bug Reports discussion board so our programmer can take a look. Thumbs up

Best Recipe Contest

August's winner is: Rhubarb Surprise Pie

    • Submitted by Lew Dancing

"Tastes like strawberry shortcake!"

The secret of liking rhubarb is combining it with a strawberry flavor.
This recipe from 30 years ago uses flavored gelatin mix rather than berries.

INGREDIENTS
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter
1 egg, beaten
2 tablespoons milk

1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
```````````````````````````
3 cups chopped rhubarb USE MORE if chopped small
1 (3 ounce) package strawberry flavored Jell-O®
TOPPING
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 cup butter, melted
```````````````````````````
Directions

Sift together the 1 cup flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the 2 tablespoons butter or margarine*. * Use hard, straight from refrigerator.

Add egg and milk; mix. May add extra Tbsp of milk if needed. Press mixture into a greased 9 inch pie plate.

Arrange rhubarb in your pie shell. Sprinkle with DRY gelatin mix.

In a small bowl, combine the 1/2 cup flour, sugar, cinnamon, and melted butter or margarine; sprinkle on top of pie.

Bake 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 50 minutes, or until rhubarb is tender.

We have a winner for the "Best Nugget" contest!

Congratulations to (steelbound), who authored this Nugget, entitled A Quick Primer, for the game Konane:

Konane is an ancient Hawaiian board game played by everyone, from the ruling class downwards, and mastering the strategic and analytical skills needed to be a good Konane player was thought to make a person a better leader in battle and at home. How to play this game was almost completely lost, a researcher in 1924 could only find a single native Hawaiian that was knowledgeable of the game. So, while a complete rule set does exist, accounts of the game before it was suppressed by Westerners give glimpses at variations and complexities to Konane that are impossible with these known rules – meaning, an unknown amount of knowledge of Konane was lost.

How to Play

Refer to rules for a complete account. In essence, after the first move by each player, which involves removing one of their own stones (thereby, making some room on the game board), every move a player makes is to capture an opponent’s stone or stones by jumping over that stone to an open space. The jumping is done in one direction and is either up/ down/ left/ or right.

How to Win

The capturing aspect to Konane makes the game kind of feel like a Checkers type game, but, one mustn’t think that the object of the game is to capture all the opponent’s stones. Instead, to win the game, one’s opponent has to have no legal moves left.

It’s this aspect of the game that I find the most interesting because the game might end with still a fair amount of pieces still left on the board, and, the game becomes more about getting your opponent to lose as opposed to trying to make yourself win.

Strategy

When this was first offered at Goldtoken I tried to find out about the strategy of this game because the first few games I played felt like a random jumble of capturing. There was not a lot to find – given it’s history, I’m not surprised. (If Chess almost died out and I was the last person to remember the game there would a lot of strategy that would need to be recovered and rediscovered by future players Smiling .)

I've played enough that I sometimes think I almost maybe understand some of the strategy to this game. So, take the following as something less than gospel.

The most important factor in securing a victory, I've found, is to make sure you bank a few moves that can used at the end of the game. The best place to do this is in one of the corners that you've isolated from the rest of the board.

I suspect that when capturing your opponent's stones that it's more important to focus on removing possible future moves of your opponent then trying to merely maximize how many stones one can capture. Exactly how this translates to influencing one's gameplay is something I'm still working on. However, sometimes, I decide not to continue a move to capture a second or third stone if it means my stone ends up somewhere that will give my opponent the chance to use a stone or stones that were previously to far away to have any legal moves, and, I'm pretty sure it was the correct thing to do, some of time, at least.

I have also noticed that ideas that I think work on the larger board variants of Konane don't necessarily seem to work with the small board variants.

I'd like to add more, but, right now I only have a few more half-baked ideas. Maybe I'll come back at a later point when I'm more sure. I have slowly warmed to this game, so, if your first impression of the game is kinda negative, I suggest playing a bit more because I think there's more meat to this game then what's initially apparent.

(steelbound) will receive a two-month extension to his current membership! Dancing

The Icon Fairy processes a lot of icons that are put in circulation so therefore I have to know what they are to label them correctly in our collections. Sounds easy right, not always Smiling. So the icons I will be highlighting are ones that I have put under the generic name of "Animal". Will be fun to see all the odd animals and perhaps one of you out there can venture a guess as to what they are Smiling. Should be a lot of fun, see you there. Name Icons.
Don't forget to check out the Icon Of The Day, I think this one is super special Thumbs up

Breaking Club News:
Brought to you by GoldToken's roving reporter, PattyMac
Not a lot of news coming out of the Clubs this month. Did receive a Winner announcement from The Horsin' Around at GT Club

[ Horsin' Around at GT: Mustang Shake it Baby Race ] Winner - unicorn

I have added a new feature to the Club News, below is our first edition is in this newsletter. We will be profiling clubs and their owners. Each month we will spotlight a Gold Token player who owns a club and learn about what makes that club and it’s members unique. We kick it off this month!

Club Connections brought to you by bookfox

There are quite a few people on GT who own more than one club, Trsm149 is such a person. She started her own club, The Deborah's Cove Family Club in 2013, saying “I wanted it to be a family fun club.” And in 2014 she “was given Jane's Gems due to Jane's health. I helped her out a lot after I had joined and she turned it over to me when she started getting sick.” A group vote changed the name to The Diamonds Are Forever Club. She is flexible about what her group wants, explaining “I try to set up tourneys that I know the members would like to play. I always ask if there is a game you would like to play, just send me a note and I will set one up and we can give it a try.”
When asked about her favorite part about being a club owner, she says “Meeting new people and enjoying playing games and talking to them.” As for the future, she affirms, “I plan on keeping both of my clubs for a long time. As long as I have members that want to play and new ones that want to join. I will be here to give the members what they want and have fun doing it.”

Trsm149 issues a warm invitation, “Signups are welcome, anyone can join either club, be a family and let's get to know each other. Here on Gold Token I feel we all are family.”
